The guesthouse is located in a prime spot in Melville, a trendy suburb of Johannesburg. one of Johannesburg's oldest suburbs. Established in 1896, Melville has always had a buzzing nightlife, a bohemian atmosphere and a village-like feel with character-filled homes.
At Ageterplaas you get to experience staying in a traditional South Afican, characterful and charming homestead, filled with old school charm, furniture and fittings. Original pressed ceilings and wooden floors, round windows and iconic verandahs are typical of the architectural design of the area.
Agterplaas Guesthouse is situated at the foot of the historical Melville Koppies.

GARDEN VIEW KING WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
This spacious north-facing room has wheelchair access from the parking area into the tiled room. The bathroom has a shower and grab rails. French doors open to an outside seating area with garden views. Air-con and free Wi-Fi are available.

Each room contains a bar fridge with complimentary juices and cold drinks, a coffee/tea station, a flat screen smart TV a desk with a seat, a fan, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi access.

Meet the owner

Meet the new owners of AgterPlaas: Annemie Turk, until recently General Manager of a casino/hotel in the South African hotel industry, and her fiancé, Elroy van Blerk, with his extensive experience in the hotel industry and in retail, as the ideal couple to take Agterplaas Guest House further. Both of them decided to move from the corporate environment to something more intimate. They believe that there can hardly be anything better for them than the traditional South African values of the welcoming environment and personal approach at Agterplaas

Neighborhood

Our guest house is not in the hustle and bustle of Melville, although within a few minutes’ walking distance from there, overlooking the Melville Koppies. The steps down the hillside to our establishment can only be accessed through a gate to which only our guests hold keys.

Melville has a wealth of good restaurants to explore during your time here, but meals can also be enjoyed in either our lovely dining room or al fresco on our patio. Please consult with our office to make arrangements.
Parts of Melville have spectacular views over the city and out to the north, and the iconic Melville Koppies Nature Reserve is home to more than 200 species of birds. Melville shops have a refreshingly eclectic feel to them.

Good to know

Melville is close to many hospitals and universities. Agterplaas makes the perfect base for academics visiting Wits and UJ universities.

Melville Koppies is a Nature Reserve and a Johannesburg City Heritage Site. It is the last conserved remnant of Johannesburg's ridges as they were before the discovery of gold in 1886. Its geology goes back three billion years. Stone tools show that Early Stone Age man camped here as long as 500 000 years ago.

We serve a variety of scrumptious breakfasts in our large dining room with authentic Oregon Pine flooring and pressed steel ceilings.
